Question 2: How does Reiki work? Answer: How Reiki works is quite simple. Ki (Japanese for life force energy) is first channeled from Spirit, God, the Universe, or whatever term you wish to use. Then that Ki "fills up" the practitioner and flows out of the hands and into whoever the recipient is. It is a natural process that everyone uses everyday, whether they realize it or not. If you were to bang your head really hard on something, what is the first thing that you would do with your hands, usually without even thinking about it? Most times, you would instinctively put your hand on the spot that hurts. This process is not some kind of placebo effect, and even if it were, if it works, there is nothing wrong with that. But there is a very real energy that flows from the hands and into the place that hurts. Most of us by now have at least some inkling that we have a chakra system that consists of several energy centres in the body. There are also many smaller energy centres, which would include the meridian points that acupuncturists use. We also have energy centres in the palms of our hands. Everyone has them. If you alive, you've got them. The energy known as Reiki actually sits at a particular frequency, just as a radio station sits at a particular place (frequency) on the radio dial. What becoming a Reiki practitioner does, is attunes you to that specific frequency that Reiki sits at. It also teaches you to be more conscious of what happens when you put hands on, even if you are not attuned to Reiki specifically. Taking a course will also give you some other tools so that you can develop your ability to heal yourself and others. You can use Reiki energy for pain and stress relief, relaxation, meditation, healing a situation or relationship, healing the past/present/future, healing physical illness or injury as well as any kind of mental and emotional trauma. Reiki can also be used before, during and after surgery, illness, birth, in order to speed up the recovery and healing process. Plants and animals also respond extremely well to Reiki. You can Reiki your food and water so that the all of the nutrients are properly absorbed into your body. Anything that you can think of, you can send Reiki to. Plus, you can use Reiki to assist you in your spiritual development. You are only limited by your own imagination. Another important topic that I'd like to mention is that the main function of Reiki is for the practitioner to heal themselves. There is a saying that I was taught by my teachers that says, "Healer, Heal Thyself." What the essence of that statement is that in order to be a clear channel for healing energy and to really be of use to anyone else, one must be healed or at least in the process of healing. I have an analogy I teach my students. If two people were caught up in a pool of quicksand and sinking, if one of those people attempted to save the other before at least getting onto solid ground, they would both go down twice as fast. The one doing the saving doesn't need to be washed, shaved and sparkly clean before grabbing a robe to pull the other out, but they need to be in a position where they are not drowning also, before they can help the other. It may even appear selfish to a bystander sitting and watching this scene, that the first person pulled himself out before helping the other. This is not the case. We have been taught for generations, that it is better to give that receive and that is "noble" to give everything you have to others, leaving nothing for yourself. This is a myth and a complete falsehood that has lead us to being and extremely burned-out, stressed-out and angry culture. If we do not take care of ourselves, we eventually will run out of any kind of "us" that we can give to others, and therefore become useless. Another fact to point out that most people don't consider, is that in order for someone to be able to give (energy, help, time, healing, a gift, etc), there must be someone in the equation who is at the receiving end. Giving does not work without someone to receive. It is a 50/50 deal. There are many forms of energy healing out there and I would never claim that Reiki is the "be all-end all", but it is a very powerful form of healing and has transform millions of lives since Mikao Usui discovered this wonderful form of healing. Reiki could become your main path, as it did for myself and my partner, or it could be a stepping stone into another path of healing. Always follow your own guidance and you can't go wrong, ever.
